Drinking Alone – Is it wrong?

Is it taboo to drink alone?  Does it mean that I have a problem?  If I tell anyone, what will they think?

Now, I’m not talking about walking to the corner store to buy a bottle of whiskey in a brown paper bag at 7 am.  Certainly, there is a big difference in the occasional glass (or two) of wine, then downing an entire bottle in order to numb feelings of depression or anxiety, if so, you shouldn’t be drinking.

Last night I found myself home alone, I didn’t have to work in the morning, the house was fairly tidy and my laundry basket was somewhat empty.  For some reason, I have a hard time relaxing when there are things still needing to be done around the house.   There was a beautiful breeze outside and earlier in the day, as I was cleaning the floor on my hands and knees, I spotted a bottle of wine in my wine rack, that I purchased for a special occasion that was never opened.

Why not?  So I popped that cork, grabbed my Olivia Pope glass, and took my party of one outside.

There is something to be said about sipping on a glass of wine in solitude.  It’s a chance to unwind, to relax, to reflect on your day, and just recharge one’s batteries.   I quickly threw away any feelings of guilt that I had about ending my day with a drink.  I had a great day, I had accomplished a lot and I wanted to celebrate ME!  “YOU GO GIRL”!

I have to admit, I had no problem what so ever finishing my fishbowl glass of Pinot by myself, but I do enjoy having a drink with friends and family rather than the isolation of drinking by myself.

When I do find myself really enjoying a drink, it usually involves one of my fab four drinking buddies:

CJ-CJ is my step-son, the master of mixology.  CJ is in charge of the holiday drinks, and it’s always a surprise as to what he is gonna concoct.  He doesn’t believe in recipes or measuring, so most of his drinks will put hair on your chest.

DEB-My best girlfriend. Fortunately, we live within walking distance of each other, which makes things rather convenient.  Enough said.

MOM-I’m lucky that I have the coolest mom in the world.  Although a total lightweight, after one drink she is already admitting that I am her favorite. (I don’t think my sister and brother read this, so it’s ok to say that).

DAD-The most knowledgeable man I know when it comes to wine.  Sitting outside overlooking  Dotty’s gardening talents while having wine and cheese for lunch, it’s a perfect combination.  I think we both have red wine flowing through our veins.

The other day I got invited to a party,
But I stayed home instead,
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker,
And his brothers Black and Red,
And we drank alone,
Yeah, with nobody else,
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself.”- George Thorogood

Thanks for stopping by.  See ya next time!  Cheers!! xo
